Cutting and finishing
Sharp blades, dust and rotating machines may cause severe harm. The following simple safety measures will provide for safe and healthy work conditions.
Cutting
Protect your fingers.
Always wear your protective gloves while cutting. Fix them at your wrist to make sure they stay in place. They must fit the size of your hand exactly.
To protect yourself from the extremely sharp blade always make sure the guard is at its lowest possible level.
Artificial “wear-and-tear” workplace – dust
In usual sewing workplaces, a mask is rarely necessary, it is obligatory in dusty areas, such as the artificial “wear-and-tear” workplace.
Make sure
- you are wearing a well fitting mask
- a dust extraction system is working or at least a high air exchange rate is provided for
Tip
An outlet in your mask makes it easier to breathe out.
Harmful dust
Avoid inhaling dust. Wear a protective mask.
Dust in the air is automatically inhaled. Coughing and sneezing are a bodily reactions to get rid of the dust.
Blowing your nose helps to get rid of larger particles. But smaller particles reach the deepest parts of your lungs and stay there.
How to remove dust
Avoid whirling up dust.
Do not stir or scatter dust, use
- vacuum cleaners instead or
- if having to use brooms, move them gently.
Dust and electricity
They are two things that do not go together well.
Make sure all openings are closed properly. Cable entry points from below are state of the art.
Tip
In case you find possibilities for improvement, please inform your electrician.
Electrical safety
Cables must always be intact, which means that they should be insulated twice. Even if only the outer insulation is damaged, the cable must be repaired.
Tip
Always ask an electrician to do electrical repairs.
Washing and tumbling machines
Rotating machines must be equipped with interlocks with guard locking. These locks ensure that the door stays locked until the cylinder has come to a complete stop. Otherwise, the rotation of the cylinder is strong to rip your arm off your body.
Tip
In case, the locking mechanism is defect, switch off the machine and inform your superior immediately.
